Assignments from 6/20/08

Hey everyone, I hope you guys had fun the first week - I certainly did! =) Here's a quick rundown of the assignments that I'd like you to work on.

1) Think of a song that you would like to learn. Either e-mail it to me (angell.shieh@ucsf.edu) or you can just post it as a comment onto this blog. Hopefully we can incorporate them into our curriculum and learn them together =)

2) Practice G, C, D, and Em chords, especially transitions between them.

3) Go through the chords of the songs by playing with a metronome (www.metronomeonline.com). Start slow and with 4 strums each chord before changing. To add complexity, speed up the metronome or start decreasing number of strums.

4) Practice strumming, especially the "praise strum" - down-down-up-up-down-up.

E minor chord (can also use fingers 1 & 2)

I was actually looking up the tabs for God of Wonder by Third Day. It sounds complicated so I'm not sure if its something that can be covered in beginner guitar.

oops, forgot to post the tabs that I found. I'm a bit confused as to how to read the tabs though.

This is a good instructional video. Thanks Will...

The tabs are another way of writing out the chord diagram that I showed you graphically. "E" is the lowest string on the guitar (fattest one). Then it works its way up E A D G B e (highest). Those are the string names. The numbers represent what fret you are going to push down. So, if you look at Em, it's represented as E0 A2 D2 G0 B3 e3. So, you put your first finger on the 2nd fret of the A string, second finger on 2nd fret of D string, 3rd finger on 3rd fret of B string and 4th finger on 3rd fret of e string. This is a little different from what I taught you because it's actually not a pure Em (it's an Em7) but it sounds very close. The disadvantage to tabs is that you have to figure out your own fingering. The numbers are just frets and you have to figure out how to play those frets w/ your 4 fingers. It comes easier with time =)
